James VI was born in Edinburgh Castle in 1566, the only son of Mary, Queen of Scots, and her second husband, Lord Darnley. As Mary was forced to abdicate shortly after his birth, he acceded to the Scottish throne as an infant and was brought up to be distanced from his mother. John Jacob Wille studied engineering at Cornell University (B.S., 1926) and New York University. He worked for the New York Port Authority, then in the Corps of Engineers, U.S. Army. As an undergraduate, Wille took an elective course in which he studied the history of the English language, fuelling an interest that was to culminate in the writing of his play.
